AP Exam Prep Resources: How to Choose

Compare official AP course materials, AP Classroom practice, AP Videos, prep courses and tutors by subject, access, feedback and cost.

Quick answer

Start with the AP exam page and its Course and Exam Description, then use the AP Classroom resources available for that course and your enrollment. AP Videos, topic questions and progress checks serve different jobs; pay for extra prep when you need a schedule, explanations or feedback beyond those official materials.

Choose AP prep by the exact course and exam, not by a broad “AP study” label. Start with the official materials, then add a course or tutor only for a specific need such as a paced plan, extra explanations or feedback on written responses.

Resource What it helps you check Access question
Course and Exam Description The course content, skills and exam requirements Is this the current document for your subject and exam year?
AP Classroom Teacher-assigned topic questions, practice and progress checks Has the teacher or coordinator added you to the class section and unlocked the material?
AP Videos Short lessons organized around AP course topics Can you sign in to AP Classroom with your College Board account?
Bluebook test previews and released questions Exam interface and the question style for a particular subject Which sample questions and exam format apply to this course?

College Board’s current guidance says teachers can unlock progress checks and assign AP Question Bank items through AP Classroom. Students enrolled in AP courses can access class assignments; self-study students can access some resources, including AP Videos. Check the course’s exam page for the material available to your situation.

Decide whether paid prep adds something useful

Use a course or tutor when its format fills a gap you can name. Compare the exact AP subjects covered, whether lessons follow the current course outline, the amount of timed practice, how answers are explained, whether a teacher reviews written work, and how long access lasts. A bundle that includes a subject you are not taking may add cost without helping your plan.

Before paying, ask your AP teacher which topics and skills need more practice. If you are preparing independently, use the official exam page and available practice to find those topics first. For the difference between college admission tests, see SAT vs ACT; for exam calculator rules, compare graphing calculators for the SAT, ACT and AP.
